HIPAA Privacy and Security Awareness Training 

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) establishes national standards designed to protect the privacy and security of an individual’s health information. These requirements apply to covered entities and their business associates that create, receive, maintain, or transmit protected health information (PHI). 

This course provides employees with a foundational understanding of HIPAA regulations, including how protected health information should be properly accessed, handled, stored, transmitted, and safeguarded. 

Protected Health Information (PHI) includes identifiable information related to an individual’s past, present, or future physical or mental health condition, healthcare services, or payment for healthcare. PHI may exist in spoken, written, paper, or electronic formats. Electronic protected health information (ePHI) refers specifically to PHI that is stored or transmitted electronically. 

Examples of information considered PHI include, but are not limited to: 

  • Social Security numbers 
  • Medical record numbers 
  • Health insurance or health plan account information 
  • Biometric identifiers, such as fingerprints or voiceprints 
  • Photographs that identify an individual 
  • Dates directly related to a person’s healthcare 
  • Other unique identifiers that can be used to identify an individual

Participants must achieve a minimum score of 80% on all required quizzes to successfully complete this course. 

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion documenting their HIPAA awareness training.
